PLANNING A CLEARANCE
Clearing a property before moving house: a practical checklist
By WastePro · Published 14 October 2026
Plan unwanted-item removal before a house move with clear keep lists, photographs and access arrangements.
Make a keep, pass-on and clear list
Work through the property room by room. Separate items you are taking with you from those you hope to sell, donate or have removed. Do not put important papers, keys or personal belongings into a clearance pile.
Plan around the moving date
Include your deadline in the first enquiry, but wait for confirmation before relying on a collection date. If another person controls access, check that they can attend or provide the agreed access.
Photograph every collection area
Show unwanted items in the house, garage, shed or garden separately. Explain what is staying in each picture. If you are organising the job remotely, make sure your photographs and item list reflect what is currently there.
Check the route for bulky items
Mention floors, stairs and narrow doorways, and ask about preparation for large furniture. Agree the collection point and any dismantling questions before the visit.
Update the scope as plans change
Selling an item or adding another pile changes what needs clearing. Let Tyler know before collection. Read our reuse guide for questions to consider before arranging removal of usable furniture.
